The father of the computer Charles Babbage’s ‘analytical engine’ was influenced by the punch card system of the Jacquard loom and the mechanism for drawing film through a camera comes from a sewing machine foot.
Textile AV (working title) is a proposal for an exhibition about moving image and sound as interpreted through textiles. Works will include screen-based works, projections, audio pieces and mixed media installations as well as physical textile pieces.
The Textile AV research project will survey UK and International artists who draw on textile practice in their making processes and examples where the resultant physical forms have an inherent relationship to moving images and sound. In particular, the research will explore connections in terms of the following themes: threads and threading, time, movement and recording and playback. The project will also explore the historical evidence of this crossover, with research into early technologies of textiles, sound recording and moving images.
