Crafting Geometry
Janis Jefferies
2007

Janis Jefferies is working with May Cornet, alumni of Goldsmiths, on a project entitled Crafting Geometry to examine the role of archives in the production of new work. It focuses on how the relationship between mathematics, mathematical forms and pattern has been visualised. It will highlight the relationship between creativity, pattern and numbers, and how traditional crafts like crochet, have been used to visualise vanguard scientific theory. They are investigating the dynamic relationship between maths and textiles using a particular archive, ‘Common Threads’ that is held in the CHRRCT. This archive was the collection of mathematician and teacher, Mary Harris.

Their research has involved developing networks and partnerships for the project. A study day was run in early 2009 with Patricia Alexander from the Education Department at Goldsmiths University and 18 young mathematicians from Forest Hill Boys School. Students explored the Common Threads Archive and focused on ways of working with geometric forms with May Cornet. A further study is planned with maths teachers.

Jefferies has secured funding from the Association for Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) for resources for teachers in the classroom around geometry and quilting. A one-day symposium took place 12th September 08 titled Building Material and Virtual Archives: Collections in the Making. There is the potential to develop an exhibition based on the project in the future.
