Manual Override
Paul Purgas
2007

During his research for Manual Override, Paul Purgas has examined the role that craft plays in the era of mass manufacturing, including the art of circuit bending: that is, randomised rewiring of internal circuits of digital hardware. Purgas is also exploring the different sectors within the global circuit-bending scene, picking out defining characteristics from international circuit-bending cultures, with the intention of isolating possible signature techniques, processes and objects from differing national collectives. He is seeking ways to communicate the language and dialogue used within circuit-bending culture, locating it within the lineage of traditional crafts processes.

Purgas is looking at live performance and an education workshop, to communicate the outcomes of his research and create an engaging public event in 2009. He is also interested in commissioning a small circuit-bent project for a live show, and possibly producing some kind of CD or DVD recording or archive.
