The week-long presentation at Bartha Contemporary will feature many of the artist’s signature glass and metal or wood vessels. However recently the artist has expanded her practice to include new unorthodox materials such as PVDF, Acetal and Fluoro Carbons. These largely synthetic materials expand the material mix and allow Dickinson to further develop her largely industrial aesthetic.
Glass is still at the centre of all her objects, often a single work combines a multitude of glass making techniques, in one instance an object exhibited here combines Cast, Blown, Slumped and Mirrored float Glass elements in a singular vessel held in a place by metal aperture. For each piece Dickinson will employ engineers and master crafts artists in different fields to make elements for her mesmerizingly beautiful vessels.
In a recent article London based art critic Anna McNay remarks:” Dickinson also likes turbines and jet engines, which have led her to replicate their ribs with her vertical cuts. She has always really enjoyed London’s urban landscape and architecture too. A lot of her inspiration, especially for the cylindrical, heavy pieces, comes from gasometers: “They’re containers, but incredibly decorative; they’re purely functional, but they’re unbelievably beautiful.” I am almost a convert myself after Dickinson’s animated tour through a book of her favorites amongst these “living and breathing” gas tanks.
In spite of using manifold complex techniques, Dickinson’s works, in the end, are all about feelings: “My works are containers, but they are containers of space, and containers of many other things – probably of emotions more than anything. I have an idea of what I want people to feel when they look at them, but whether they feel that or not is another thing.” Ultimately, it is up to each individual viewer to engage in the dialogue and to fill the seemingly empty vessel with his own feelings as he experiences and explores it.”
