Gloucester
General Information
Stroud International Textiles will be showcasing stunning, beautiful new work by textile artists and designers PTOLEMY MANN and ANNA GLASBROOK in a new exhibition at Gloucester Cathedral called THE ARCHITECTURE OF CLOTH, COLOUR & SPACE.
Colour saturated lengths of cloth hand woven and digitally printed by world class designer, Ptolemy Mann, will wrap the magnificent columns in the Nave of the cathedral.
Ptolemy Mann’s wall based hand dyed and hand woven silk textile artworks will punctuate the cathedral space bringing a colourful softness and geometry to the viewer as they wander through the cathedral space. Collaborative furniture pieces by Kristian Stringer and Marina Dragomirova will sit on top of the flagstones alongside Mann’s gem-coloured rugs celebrating the longstanding relationship between ecclesiastical architecture and commissioned textiles and objects.
Ptolemy is one of the UK’s leading textile artists with a reputation for innovation and for the intensity of the colour she incorporates in her work.
She is a hand weaver who works in partnership with architects, art consultants and interior designers to produce hand dyed and woven Textile Art pieces to commission for specific domestic, corporate and public spaces. She explores the use of colour internally particularly in relation to way finding and psychological wellbeing within healthcare environments.
In hidden parts of the cathedral the architectural textile artist Anna Glasbrook will reveal her textile art pieces in the wintery light and splendor of the cathedral’s fine architecture. Anna Glasbrook creates dynamic stitched architectural pieces that vibrate with vivid colour and movement. Using brightly coloured threads, she has developed an innovative and contemporary technique to construct vibrant three-dimensional drawings in space.
Anna has designed work for Chelsea Flower show, shortlisted for Crafts Council ‘Hot House’ show and had work on prime time Tom Selleck show for CDS in USA.
Her inspiration always comes from photographic images she takes while exploring the urban and rural environment, translating contours, textures and colours into three-dimensional pieces that investigate space and line.
The gothic splendour of the cathedral will be a dramatic background to the vibrant and colourful textiles of these two inspiring, innovative and successful contemporary artists.
