General Information
The Cambridge Glass Fair is one of the leading specialist fairs in the U.K. with around 100 exhibitors selling fine antique and collectable glass from all periods. Exhibitors also include contemporary artists showing their own work in the dedicated Contemporary Hall. Among these are makers using various skills including blowing, engraving, kiln work, lamp work, sand casting, pate de verre, stained glass and jewellery making.
Held in the prestigious surroundings of Chilford Hall Vineyard in Cambridgeshire, which is also home to the famous Curwen Studio, this twice-yearly event features exhibitions, demonstrations and book signings.
Demonstrations have included glass blowing, engraving and lampwork-beadmaking. Various well known personalities from the antiques world have attended the fair including Eric Knowles, Andy McConnell and Mark Hill. Sam Herman, the founder of the studio glass movement in Britain in the 1960’s, recently led a seminar at the fair on the future of glassmaking in the U.K.
The foyer exhibition for this fair will feature a display of pieces from the 1950’s and early 60’s by the British designer Ernest Gordon for the Swedish manufacturer, Afors.
Past exhibitions have shown collections of British, Czech and Continental glass from various periods from rare 17th and 18th century goblets to Whitefriars glass of the 1960’s. These are archived on the fair’s website as are the promotional postcards which have also become collectable.
Refreshments are available; there is live music at lunchtime and free parking.
