Course details
Creative Connections is a unique course run by Wolverhampton Adult Education Service. It offers ‘survival skills’ for people with creative skills who want to explore self- employment as an option. During the course you will be encouraged to explore different ways of working and develop the skills needed for freelancing including; – Building confidence in talking about your work and approaching and negotiating with organisations – Marketing – Understanding pricing, invoicing and tax – Identifying promotional tools including social networking – Seeking opportunities – How to capitalise on local knowledge and resources – Putting together a final public showcase event – The arts in community contexts
The next course takes place on Tuesday afternoons at Bilston Craft Gallery 1-3pm for 20 weeks. It starts on Tuesday the 15th January 2013.
Course requirements
Learners would be expected to either hold a Degree in their arts subject or have considerable experience in their area of practice. Learners should also have IT skills including word processing and the use of email and Internet.
What are the benefits of this course?
Learners will be able to build their confidence as a freelancer and gain an insight into ways of working and opportunities available within the West Midlands region. There will be an opportunity to exhibit work as part of a course showcase exhibition taking place in May 2013. Learners will be able to network with other creatives as well as a variety of arts professionals who will deliver talks during the course.
How will I learn?
Sessions include group seminars, one to one tutorials, visiting speakers and visits. Some sessions will include working on computers. During the course learners will undertake a series of course assignments and tasks including a weekly progress diary, compiling a CV and statement, completing a SWOT analysis and developing an action plan.
Learners will also be expected to prepare and install a display/event as part of the course showcase event as well as contributing to organising and marketing it.
How will my progress be monitored and assessed?
The course tutor will provide written and verbal feedback on course assignments. In additional to the learning aims and objectives of the course, learners will set their personal learning goals at the beginning of the course and progress towards achieving these will be regularly reviewed. The course is non-accredited
What will I be able to do after this course?
Learners will be equipped with a knowledge of how to operate on a freelance basis, including how to promote themselves, approach organisations and network.

If you are in receipt of JSA (Job Seekers Allowance) or Work related ESA (Employment Support Allowance) you will be exempt from fees. In addition to this there are discretionary discounts for learners on benefits who are seeking employment, do get in touch to discuss this.

Are there any additional costs?
Learners will be expected to present their work to a professional standard for the course showcase event. This may be associated with additional costs for example the mounting and framing of work where relevant.
