This stunning exhibition celebrates the astonishing diversity and originality of today’s artist makers, with innovative ceramics, jewellery, basket making, textiles and glass by leading makers and emerging talents.
A central theme of the exhibition is the nature of materials and their transformation. It opens with the most elemental of materials – ceramics – and ranges from Gabriele Koch’s monumental, hand-built pots and Carina Ciscato’s fluid, rhythmic vessels to Valeria Nascimento’s paper-thin Hibiscus flowers scattered across an entire wall.
The blurring of boundaries between different crafts is explored, with sculptural woven willow by Mary Butcher and Lizzie Farey shown alongside exquisite woven textiles by Ismini Samanidou and Ptolemy Mann.
The highly individual jewellery of Jane Adam, Emmeline Hastings and Nora Fok draws upon a range of materials, largely non-precious, while newcomer Giedre Vadeike’s spectacular neckpieces perfectly fit the description of ‘wearable art’.
