Helen Storey who is Professor of Fashion and Science at London College of Fashion has collaborated with chemist Professor Tony Ryan from the University of Sheffield and Trish Belford, textile designer, to bring us Catalytic Clothing – clothing and textiles that seek to purify the air we breathe.
People from different worlds whose minds have come together in highly successful art and science collaborations. People who are shaping our future through design & dialogue. Rhian Solomon (textile artist) will discuss sKINship – a project that draws the parallels between the body and dress, skin and cloth. They will be joined by Jessica Hemmings (writer), David Gates (winner Wesley Barrell prize/designer bespoke furniture), Alice Kettle, Claire Curneen (ceramics), Shelly Goldsmith, Sharon Blakey, Ismini Samanidou and the designer makers who were commissioned to create work for the Pairings II exhibition that is on at the same time (28 April – 27 May).
They will debate how collaborating has influenced their work. The resulting work is imaginative, inspiring and always innovative as a result of the exchanges.
The day will enable delegates to question, debate and explore the wider issues of tradition versus the contemporary, art and science and explore the challenges and opportunities of working in partnerships and with new and unfamiliar techniques and tools.
Through the symposium delegates will gain fresh new ways to experience craft and design and reflect on opportunities to explore their individual creative paths to push the boundaries of their chosen fields of expertise. The speakers will share the experience of their partnerships, giving an insight into their techniques, methods and innovative thinking.
The day will be chaired by Alice Kettle contemporary textile artist and co-curator of the Pairings exhibition.
