Learn/ Public and Private: Working with Commissions and Galleries/ 10 July 2009

General Information

Crafts Council talks programme at New Designers 2009

11am-1pm
Public: Commissions
Commissions within the public realm can provide exciting diversification for a maker’s practice, such as creating interior or exterior works that allow their work to be seen in new contexts. Similarly by working directly with the public though agencies, makers can create works which have relevance for those whose everyday lives they touch.

2pm-4.30pm
Private: Galleries and Commissions
Many makers sell their work to private collectors and corporate bodies by commission. The conduit for this often comes through commercial galleries or art consultants. These relationships can help makers not only make contact with collectors, but facilitate the commissioning process, and provide makers with a profile and platform within a range of different sectors, broadening the market and reach of their work.

A range of established makers will talk about their experiences of developing new markets for their work and building their name within them.
