Learn/ Three by One: A Symposium/ 2 December 2009
General Information
The symposium will develop and explore themes which resonate in Alison Britton’s major exhibition Three by One, using the unrivalled collections of the Crafts Council, Crafts Study Centre and the British Council as a basis for a deeply considered personal review of British craft. Supported by a new book of essays published by the Crafts Council in partnership with the Crafts Study Centre, the symposium will draw together writers and craft historians with differing perspectives on contemporary craft history.
The keynote presentation will be given by Dr Sandra Alfoldy, Chair, Historical and Critical Studies at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design on the theme of gender and the contribution to craft history made by pioneer women craft artists. Alison Britton will debate curatorship in the context of the exhibition and Mark Bills, Curator of the Watts Gallery will discuss contemporary craft in the context of the refurbishment and rearticulation of a key historic arts building.
The event will be chaired by Dr Glenn Adamson by Dr Glenn Adamson, acclaimed author of Thinking through Craft and Deputy Head of Research at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Professor Simon Olding, Director of the Crafts Study Centre, will present on the contribution to the craft exhibition made by the craft guild. The symposium is presented by the Crafts Study Centre and the Crafts Council.
