New Sculptures by Mari-Ruth Oda at Central Art Gallery, Ashton-Under-Lyne.
Most of Mari-Ruth Oda’s previous work has been made in ceramic. This exhibition culminates a period of Research and Development into new materials, which has been realised with the help of Arts Council funding.
The sculptures for this exhibition are made of a mixture of materials including Jesmonite, celluose fibre and copper tubing.
Oda draws her inspirations from Natural Forms: ‘Bones and geological formations—all these things fill me with a sense of beauty and wonder, and of smallness and oneness of everything. Forms seem to repeat themselves in differing contexts and scales.
My thoughts on species extinction, mortality, immortality, our planet, and our consciousness, all these things inform the work.
The individual pieces may appear to be fragments of something, yet it is my intention that they convey an overall sense of wholeness, as the title may infer.’
