Make

MAKE is a new collective manifesto for craft in Scotland drawn from the aspirations, ambitions and concerns of Scotland’s multi-faceted craft community. The MAKE Learn research project includes recommendations to:

  • tackle inequality in craft education
  • change perceptions of craft
  • identify career paths; and
  • facilitate new experiences and opportunities for all of Scotland’s young people.

Useful tools

The Department for International Trade has launched the Export Support Service, a free helpline and online service to get answers to practical questions about exporting to Europe. It brings together cross-government information and support in one place.

The Social Mobility Commission roadmap is designed to help organisations know what needs to be done to improve their socio-economic diversity and inclusion.

The Cultural Value Centre’s co-created evaluation principles share ideas about how evaluation is carried out and used in the cultural sector. The principles are intended to be the start of a conversation about evaluation in the sector.

Creative Scotland have launched Our Creative Voice to promote the value of art and creativity in our lives. There is evidence on the impact of participating in arts and creativity and tools to help make the case for culture.

The Higher Education Access Tracker (HEAT) is a new database of all higher education institutions’ outreach activities in schools and further education colleges across England as part of access and participation programmes.

Evidence reviews about culture knowledge exchange and practical learning

NCACE (The National Centre for Academic and Cultural Exchange) has published a review of literature on knowledge exchange between HEIs and the Arts and Culture Sector, together with an action research report on the skills and capacity underpinning this. Findings confirm that arts and cultural research and practice play a vital role in building relationships among a wide range of societal stakeholders. Yet, there’s a real sense that more hidden evidence exists within the voluntary and the arts sector. The knowledge transfer approaches used in other sectors are not necessarily fit for purpose in the creative industries.

NCACE has also published an analysis of how academic research generates arts and culture related impact.

Reimagining practical learning in secondary schools, from the Royal Academy of Engineering, is a literature review that explores evidence about the importance of practical learning in secondary schools.

Calls for improved Government support for arts and culture

The Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre sets out in a briefing where Government support needs to improve for the creative industries. It includes -

  • Better tax advice and business support
  • Sector-wide infrastructure investment that strengthens links between the R&D ecosystem, company growth, and productivity
  • A Freelance Commissioner to build more resilience in the UK's self-employed workforce
  • Level up early life experiences and offer a new, long-term financial settlement for cultural education.

Councils’ culture services are a key part of levelling up, driving footfall in high streets. LGA (The Local Government Association) is calling on the Government to make £400,000 available to develop cultural compacts and £100 million capital funding to convert disused retail units on high streets into creative studios. The creative use of empty retail spaces can help to revive town centres and provide a mixed economy on the high street.

Updates on tax reporting delays, London funding, recruitment…and a celebration!

The Government has delayed plans to digitalise the tax system for sole traders, self-employed people and small businesses until 2024.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced details of a £1million fund to help champion diversity in the capital’s public spaces and ensure London’s landmarks and monuments reflect the achievements of all who have contributed to the success of the city.

Arts Professional reports that arts organisations are struggling to recruit amid a resurgence in job opportunities. High competition within and beyond the sector has created a seller's market for job seekers.

The Government has issued an invitation to Unboxed, the national celebration of creativity planned across the UK in 2022, with ten creative projects demonstrating the nation’s talent in science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.
