Strategy and prospectus

  • Craft research

Our research strategy for 2018-2022

The Crafts Council’s research team delivers rigorous evidence on craft trends, achieving recognised impact on policy and practice. The primary purpose of our research programme is to produce and disseminate evidence to inform policy and practice to support a thriving UK craft sector. Our evidence also informs the Crafts Council’s business plan and the design, prioritisation and delivery of our programmes.

The craft sector requires a robust evidence base to inform how it is best supported and to demonstrate its social, economic and cultural value to Government, policy-makers, funders and investors. Without this evidence the sector cannot make the case or make informed decisions. The Crafts Council is uniquely positioned to produce evidence on behalf of the sector and to promote findings both within the sector and within the wider business, political and cultural landscape, nationally and internationally.

The executive summary of the research strategy provides an overview of the framework for our research programme.

Our research prospectus

The Crafts Council is keen to work more collaboratively with higher education institutions to achieve greater excellence in research investigating craft, making and materials.

Our short prospectus sets out our research interests, what we can offer and how we believe co-produced research with us can offer new pathways to impact. We would like to develop more research partnerships with higher education institutions, drawing on our networks, collections, archives and well-regarded research projects.

For more information, please see our higher education prospectus.

Contact research@craftscouncil.org.uk if you would like to talk to us about research.
