Game of Thrones jewellery designers Yunus & Eliza will be speaking at Flourish
Yunus & Eliza are an award winning jewellery duo whose partnership has gone on to become one of the most in demand and respected in the industry. Their second brand MEY Designs is co-owned with Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton, and is licensed by HBO to sell products the duo creates for the TV series. Yunus & Eliza will be speaking at Flourish - our professional development conference for makers and designers - about mastering the work/life balance. We ask them, ahead of Flourish, about their work, inspirations and career challenges.
Can you tell us a bit about your work?
We are jewellers who create bespoke sculptures across a number of disciplines – art, interior, film, fashion… We have become known for large sculptural works, which we hand carve and then lost wax cast. Our training was in sculpture and fine art – jewellery was an accident.
What are you working on right now?
Limited edition candelabra for Garsington Opera on the Getty estate. Lots of bespoke rings. A film we can’t mention yet. And we have just bought a small foundry – which is keeping us busy!
Why do you think professional development is important?
If you think you’ve learnt all you need to know probably something very boring is going on… it’s important to keep exploring and growing, expanding your idea of what is possible, gaining knowledge and learning from other people's journeys.
What has been your biggest career challenge and how did you overcome it?
Wholesale probably. Getting the most out of it to grow our brand and then stopping when we didn’t need it anymore.
Makers have a tendency to work in isolation, in their own studios. Do you think it’s important that they connect with other makers and creative professionals?
We’ve always designed in a bit of a vacuum, never keeping up with what other designers are up to, and we’ve liked it that way, there’s something pure about it. But in terms of a network of other entrepreneurs and designer businesses we have found our friendships invaluable. We really recommend building a strong supportive community around you of people on similar paths. Collaboration across different disciplines can be really fun.
What are your inspirations?
Currently automatons. In general, nature, architecture, dreams, literature, sci-fi, technology, ancient world.
Meet Yunus & Eliza and be inspired by their career experiences including working on the jewellery for Game of Thrones at Flourish.
