Julia Griffiths Jones

Collect Open 2020, Stand E3, East Wing

Julia Griffiths Jones is an award-winning Welsh artist-maker, who studied at the Royal College of Art and is best known for her drawings of textiles that she translates into steel wire and enamel.

For Collect Open 2020 Griffiths Jones has created new work in textile and metal in response to a residency she undertook in Kachchh, Gujarat in 2017. Here, she became fascinated by pieced and embroidered fabric dowry sacks used by the nomadic Rabari tribe to transport their possessions on their camels. Her interpretations are large metal tassels welded into the seams of brightly coloured metal sacks which are full of wire and enamel utensils. The nomadic theme is further represented in a wire and enamel wall drawing depicting people, their possessions and animals, moving through the landscape.
