Professor Mike Press

Mike Press is Professor of Design Policy within Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee. Prior to this he was Head of Gray’s School of Art, The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

He has written and researched widely on design, innovation, contemporary craft and the management of creativity, speaking at conferences worldwide. An extensive publishing record includes authorship of three books, including “The Design Agenda: a guide to successful design management” and “The Design Experience”, both of which are standard texts and translated in Chinese, Russian and Spanish. He is also a contributor to television and radio programmes on design.

He was joint director of the Home Office funded Design Against Crime research project from 1999. He was a member of the selection panel for the Design Council’s Millennium Products, and is a former Chair of the European Academy of Design. He was the initiator and Creative Director for Look 2005 – Aberdeen’s first visual arts festival. Current research interests include design entrepreneurialism, craft and design innovation, and social design.

He has been research advisor to a number of UK universities, and has undertaken consultancy for Universities in Europe and North America. He was an early advocate of practice-based research in design and how craft research can contribute to other disciplines. He has supervised doctoral research in digital jewellery, textile-based communications, forensic jewellery and ‘speaking chairs’, and has examined over 20 PhDs across fashion, design, craft, design management and service design.

Most recently he was advisor to the Government of Rwanda on the development of design education and a national design innovation strategy. He is also a partner in the Open Change consultancy that promotes and enables transformation through service design, across the public, private and third sectors.
