Five visual artist commissions

Deadline: 24 January

Jobs

Description

Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery are delighted to announce that they will shortly be going into partnership with the British Museum. The partnership will create the UK's first pre-history Partnership Gallery here in Shrewsbury and offers unparalleled opportunities to engage customers with Shropshire and a fascinating period of UK history. The partnership has been prompted by the recent discovery of the Shropshire Sun Pendant – an exquisite gold ornament and one of the most significant Bronze Age objects ever discovered in Britain. The pendant has been purchased by the British Museum and will go on display to the public for the first time in Shrewsbury in autumn 2021 alongside the North Shropshire Hoards – items discovered with the pendant and purchased by Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery.

Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery recently secured funding from Arts Council England to support the first phase of the partnership (2021-3). As a result, we are seeking to appoint five visual artists, designers, or illustrators.

Job Description

This is a part-time commission. The successful candidates will produce unique designs inspired by one of our collections:

  • archaeology
  • geology and fossils
  • decorative arts (ceramics)
  • fine art
  • costume.

Alternatively, the candidate could produce ranges based on key objects. For more information on the collections please visit: shropshiremuseums.org.uk/smag/

The designs will be owned by Shropshire Museums’ Service and will be used to create ranges of bespoke merchandise for sale in our in-person and online shops. The purpose of the commission is to offer our customers a new and unique retail experience, helping them to engage with our collections and giving them the best possible experience of Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery. Successful candidates will be given access to the appropriate collection.
