Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery are delighted to announce that they are going into partnership with the British Museum. The partnership will create the UK's first pre-history Partnership Gallery here in Shrewsbury in 2024-5 and offers unparalleled opportunities to engage customers with Shropshire and a fascinating period of UK history. The partnership has been prompted by the recent discovery of the Shropshire Sun Pendant – an exquisite gold ornament and one of the most significant Bronze Age objects ever discovered in Britain. The pendant has been purchased by the British Museum and will go on display to the public for the first time in Shrewsbury in autumn 2021 alongside the North Shropshire Hoards – items discovered with the pendant and purchased by Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery.
Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery recently secured funding from Arts Council England to support the first phase of the partnership (2021-3). As a result, we are seeking to appoint a Goldsmith.
The Goldsmith will work with the British Museum to understand the Shropshire Sun Pendant and create a replica. The replica will become part of the permanent collection at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery and go on permanent display in the Partnership Gallery alongside the North Shropshire Hoards. Details of the Sun Pendant, including dimensions and weight, can be found on the website.
The Goldsmith will also work with a Videographer to support the production of a short film engaging audiences with the processes by which the original may have been created. The purpose of the replica is to encourage and engage new audiences with the Shropshire Sun Pendant – the skill and process of its creation and the stories it tells about humankinds' relationship with the Shropshire landscape. This commission is part-time.
