Master Carpenter's Chair
This chair, designed by John Makepeace and built by Clive Baines, was created for the Master of the City Livery Company. Too often, Masters of Livery Companies suffer the discomfort of cumbersome thrones devised with little regard for the human anatomy. John Makepeace has made a point of designing chairs that reflect the elegant proportions of the body. It was also part of the brief to express the distinguished history, values and purpose of the Company.

The chair has three legs, the leg to the rear runs directly up the back to provide positive lumbar support. Vertical layers wrap around the back and support the Company shield in burnished white gold. Each side of the back, multiple layers sweep forward to form the arms. Made of ‘bog’ oak, the wood has been conserved beneath the Fens since storms destroyed the high forest at the time the pyramids were being built (3000 BC.). Size: 64cm x 50cm x 105cms (h)
