Peter Hayes: Fire, Earth Water - Evolving Ceramics

Peter Hayes, Standing Stone

'My aim in my work is not to compete with nature; but for the work to evolve within the environment.' (Peter Hayes)

We are delighted to welcome back Peter Hayes, the internationally renown sculptor and ceramicist working in Bath. The distinctive organic appearance of Peter Hayes' work builds on the techniques and methods he learned throughout his extensive travels in Africa, India, Asia and New Mexico. Peter is drawn to the shapes of artefacts from other cultures and times that remain timeless. Moreover, from his early introduction to ceramics on archaeological digs, Peter has been interested in the process of change and evolvement in objects: his work does not compete with nature; but evolves within the environment. For example, the introduction of minerals into the ceramic surface such as iron and copper with the elements of time and erosion, creates unique pieces that take on their own developing surface. Similarly, the individual character of materials, from ceramic, glass and stone expose both limitations and tolerance. As Peter says, each individual piece takes on its own developing surface; its own history and its own aesthetic.
