Crafts issue 283: March / April 2020

How making can challenge norms and spark debate

The March/April 2020 issue of Crafts magazine asks vital questions about the place of craft in a fast-changing world. As the Crafts Council’s new London gallery opens, leading practitioners involved in its inaugural exhibition emphasise the life-affirming nature of making, while a new generation of fashion and jewellery designers adapt to the times, using artisanal skills to challenge and provoke. We assess the impact of Grymsdyke Farm, a laboratory for experimental making in rural Buckinghamshire, and visit the home of ceramicist Carol McNicoll, where high and low art and craft are jumbled together in an exuberant collage.

Elsewhere in the issue, we talk performance and pottery with rising star Shawanda Corbett, eye up a sugary feast by food historian Ivan Day, meet a new generation of fashion designers using craft as a tool for social commentary and ask Australian artist Yhonnie Scarce about the inspiration behind her glass art, which shines a light on the oppression of Aboriginal people.

    Covid-19 update:

Due to the pressures caused by the coronavirus, Crafts magazine will not be publishing a May/June or July/August issue this year. Its next issue will be September/October 2020, which will have a new look and feel, as well as a host of new contributors from across the cultural sector and a rich cache of stories to inspire you.
