Crafts issue 292: Ways of seeing

In our January/February issue, explore the world through the eyes of the maker, preview Collect art fair and discover craft escapes in remote locations

In this issue, Crafts meets makers who are defying expectations of their materials, challenging us to look at objects and places with fresh eyes. In Paris, we visit our cover star Simone Pheulpin, whose ambiguous textile forms recall geological strata and the rings of a tree, and in Sunderland and Sheffield, we explore the visual trickery of glass artist Anthony Amoako-Attah and metalsmith Francisca Onumah, who take inspiration from woven textiles.

Meanwhile, ahead of Collect art fair’s return to London in February, Crafts discovers how makers will be leading visitors on a journey around the world within the halls of Somerset House, with artworks made in response to their local environments.

The endangered craft of neon making

Elsewhere, the magazine offers travel inspiration of the literal kind, looking at hotels around the world that are shaped by human hands, and craft retreats with a difference – from lacemaking in the wilds of Iceland to roketsu dyeing in Japan and spoon-carving on a Welsh farm. Meanwhile, we explore the makers keeping crafts alive in war-torn areas, and breathing new life into the colourful world of neon.

    Online Talk

Rescue mission: which endangered crafts should we save?

    17:30 – 18:45 GMT, 24 January

Making traditions are an inherent part of our collective heritage, but as society and technology advances, some inevitably become at risk of dying out. How do we decide what’s an essential part of our culture and what criteria do we judge this on? And what lessons can traditional making practices teach us for the future?

This Crafts magazine talk will seek to answer some of these questions with the help of a panel of makers and experts, including Robin Wood, co-founder of the Heritage Crafts Association; glass and neon artist Katherine Huskie, furniture designer Gareth Neal and architect and designer Dima Srouji. It will be chaired by Crafts editor Malaika Byng.
