With Enterprise Allowance Scheme support I began my carving business making decorative functional dishes and bowls. Fish and leaf shapes appealed because their tails and stalks make good handles. Requests for house signs followed and I was soon doing my first public art commissions. With relief carving I can unite picturemaking with the physical deliberateness of carving, and combine colour with the crisp use of light and shadow. I do paint my work but customers often specify a natural finish.
