Wheel of Life
When we first meet someone, we make judgments on who they are and their capabilities, as a Deaf BSL user and a woman of colour I am misperceived daily. Through my appearance, race, gender and preferred language use, without any sense of my truth or identity. I saw the zoetrope as a perfect mode for exploring the ’what you see is not necessarily what you get’ trope. Simultaneously being intrigued at the notion of using previously unassociated materials and designs with this item of ‘technology’.
Silk tie-dyed and then designs screen-printed in layers. Devoré is the final process.
The white, ‘feathered’ area is where the Devoré has burned out the threads. This design is influenced by that part of the ear that allows sounds to vibrate and be ‘heard’, the cochlea. This shape repeats itself in my work and symbolises my deaf identity.
Materials: 8 x silk in perspex panels and wooden frame on a wooden base
