The wych elm was planted in Hawksworth, Nottinghamshire, by the first bishop of Cape Town in ~1860. The organic nature of the elm was maintained, sanding but preserving, the undulations of the burrs prior to oiling. The large holes and cracks in the burr elm was filled and stabilised using carbon dated 5000 year old bog oak inserts & butterflies.poshrob ltdLondon, EnglandBurr elm superdooperkingsize bed. , Robert CarterThe bedhead was 2.3m wide & 1.5m wide. The elm posts were 65mm square. The bed was designed to take a mattress 2m long, 1.8m wide and 290mm high. The elm sides of the bed were somewhat narrower than the headboard and footboard because the mattress is relatively deep at 290mm. Hence the sides were strengthened by gluing and screwing 60 x 60 x 6mm metal angle along the inside of each of the timber sides.Detail of footboard, Robert CarterDetail of bog oak inserts, Robert CarterBedhead, Robert CarterThe organic nature of the timber was maintained as much as possible when making the panels and constructing the bed.Detail of bog oak butterflied stabilised crack in headboard, Robert CarterWych elm bedAboutThis commission was a particular pleasure because the Client accompanied me to select the timber at the Geddington sawmill, Northamptonshire.
