Andrew is the passionate photographer in the family, with Jill specialising in vibrant watercolours and the Japanese art of Chigiri-e. Japan is close to both of their hearts and the influences are apparent.
Andrew Clay is a photographer. Travelling everywhere with his camera, he certainly has an eye for a landscape. Living in on Aske Estate in Richmond means that the Dales and surrounding areas of outstanding beauty are on the doorstep. In fact, he simply has to walk out of the house and is immediately reaching for his camera. Further afield is his love of Japan. The juxta position of the peaceful dales and the bustling city of Kyoto is plain to see. Andrew still manages to catch the hidden peace of both amazing countries. In November 2022, after waiting 3 years to get back to Japan, he was spoilt for choice. Every direction holds inspiration. He will be sorting and editing his photographs for many months to come. In 2024 he will be organising a Photography tour to Kyoto during the iconic Cherry Blossom season. While Andrew has one passion Jill has an eclectic mix.
Jill Clay describes herself as a ‘Jill of all trades and master of none’.. She runs a tour company taking guests to Japan, works on Create and Craft TV, is an author, kimono dresser and teaches workshops throughout the year. The Ying to Andrews Yang you could say. This exhibition shows her three favourite techniques. Watercolour onto rag paper,Chigiri-e, Japanese paper onto glass and Resin. The watercolours are vibrant and colourful. Many with a distinct Japanese influence. Chigiri-e is a Japanese art meaning to tear. Using handmade papers from Arashiyama, Kyoto and recycled glass vases. Jill creates pieces of art that depict both flowers and scenes of nature. And course, even her resin pieces have elements of Japanese culture in her designs and colours.
As part of the exhibition there will be a display of traditional Japanese kimono. Workshops on Chigiri-e and resin are being planned to take place during the exhibition.
