Since indigo made its way into Japan about 1400 years ago, it has occupied a unique place in Japanese culture and society by enjoying popularity among aristocrats and commoners at various points in history.
Indigo continues to inspire in the modern era and its influence can be seen in the colour of Sky Tree , the tallest structure in Japan, and in the design of the logos of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The influence of aizome is widely seen outside of Japan and this exhibition aims to highlight this by bringing together talented artists specialising in different disciplines and techniques, whose works show the respect for tradition and spirit of innovation.
