Intoart’s Christian Ovonlen presents his first solo exhibition with Brookfield Properties, in partnership with Crafts Council.
The British textile artist and winner of the Brookfield Properties Craft Award 2022 will present a selection of illustrated works in a free exhibition taking place from 20 June - 22 September across two Brookfield Properties sites - 99 Bishopsgate and Aldgate Tower in the City of London.
Theatrical and Botanical will showcase a collection of the artist's hand-dyed, printed silks which draw on a wide range of influences - from theatre, to dance, music and fashion. Known for his use of bold colours and lavish textures, Ovonlen translates works on paper into the medium of textile design, creating compositions that hang vertically to reference the stages and performers that inspired them.
In recognition of his contribution to contemporary craft, Ovonlen’s work has also been acquired into the Crafts Council Collection. The exhibition and acquisition of Ovonlen’s work are both part of the Brookfield Properties Craft Award – a leading craft prize for UK-based artists, presented to the artist at Collect 2022 for his ‘Ballets Russes’ series of theatrical silks.
Ovonlen is represented by Intoart, a London-based collective of artists and designers with learning disabilities and autism, established in 2000 by co-founders Ella Ritchie and Sam Jones.
