Past Present future: Celebrating Craft is a series of curated displays highlighting the diverse, emerging and established makers working in studios across the North West.

The event programme links regional displays, festivals and events presented by craft organisations, museums and galleries from the North West Craft Network throughout 2022.

From January - May 2022, the Bluecoat Display Centre (Bdc) will present selling displays including new ceramics by Jacob Chan, a two-man show featuring ceramics by Stephen Dixon and Paul Scott together for the first time and metalwork by Francisca Onumah.

Bdc will also feature ceramics by Attila Olah, Emma Rodgers, Halima Cassell, David & Margaret Frith, wood and furniture by Hugh Miller and glass by Verity Pulford in a retail showcase throughout the year.

These makers’ work is currently on display now at the Walker Art Gallery. The exhibition draws on the Gallery’s outstanding collections of late 20th-century craft and combines these with new work inspired by the historic collections. It demonstrates how established and emerging makers are inspired by the past, combining traditional skills with ideas for the future.

From January - April 2022, the exhibition includes a collaboration between Emma Rogers and Jacob Chan featuring the work of Julia Carter Preston (1926-2012). The stunning displays also feature furniture maker Hugh Miller, sculptor Halima Cassell M.B.E. and potters David & Margaret Frith and Attila Olah. A display of blue and white ceramics by Paul Scott from the Walker’s collection, together with loan works is in Room 11. Striking hand-built porcelain made by Claire Curneen can be seen in Room 5 until May 2022. Curneen has lent her work Baroque and Berserk, on display with three loan pieces from a local private collection.

From April 2022 onwards, Award 2021 winner Steve Dixon will show new work inspired by the Walker’s historical collections of Italian maiolica and Liverpool-made 18th-century delftware. The new displays will continue Steve’s exploration of the geographical similarity between the historic migration of maiolica and the migration routes of contemporary refugees and asylum seekers. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of ‘Meet the Maker’ talks and films of the makers talking about their work can be seen in the Craft and Design Gallery.

Past, Present Future: Celebrating Craft has been supported by the Art Fund’s Professional Network Grant and is presented in partnership with the Williamson Art Gallery and the Bluecoat Display Centre.
