We are delighted to welcome Muna Ally, artist and founder of The Kanga Project; a charity initiative celebrating women with gifts of Kanga in Zanzibar, this Easter for a hands on workshop exploring the importance of the Kanga through design.
About Kanga: The kanga is a colourful fabric worn by women and occasionally by men throughout the African Great Lakes region. It is a piece of printed cotton fabric about 1.5 m by 1 m, often with a border along all four sides (called pindo in Swahili), and a central part (mji) which differs in design from the borders. Using simple techniques, surface designer Muna will guide you in creating your own Kanga inspired by traditional motifs, pattern placement and language, together embedding a deeper message into the fabric. You will complete your design on A4 using paints, pens, pencils, collage or any other medium you prefer. Once complete and sent back to Milton Keynes Arts Centre, they will be printed onto tote bags and returned to you.
