Get into the Flow: Jewellery Workshop and Talk

10 October

SilverHub Studios, Edinburgh

£5

  • Flourish Jewellery Project, Shanon Tofts, 2021

Join The Flourish Jewellery Project CIC for a making session and discussion focusing on the mental health and wellbeing benefits of craft — specifically jewellery and metalwork.

In honour of World Mental Health Day on Monday 10 October 2022, The Flourish Jewellery Project will run two sessions that highlight how the act of making can help individuals recover from trauma and boost overall levels of mental wellbeing.

The morning session will invite individuals recovering from trauma to experience the transformative process of jewellery making. Using sheet and wire metal, participants will get into "the flow”, learning new methods and techniques that require mindfulness, patience and determination. Transferable to all aspects of life.

In the afternoon, project directors Lisa and Jessica (who are both professional jewellers and trained community development workers) will discuss Flourish and share best practices with fellow makers. This session is suitable for craft professionals who are interested in the impact socially engaged craft can have on marginalised individuals and communities.

There will also be a short film screening about the project alongside photography and jewellery made by participants. This part of the day will be ticketed, please book via Eventbrite.

“Flourish Jewellery CIC’s community outreach work, which sees women recover from trauma through the power of jewellery making, is simply remarkable. The Goldsmiths’ Centre is delighted to support Jessica and Lisa as they change more women’s lives through their new Glow Programme. Made possible through a £11,600 grant provided by The Goldsmiths’ Company’s Charity, we look forward to seeing how this project will continue to break down barriers, open careers into the craft, and change lives in the process.”

About The Flourish Jewellery Project CIC

The Flourish Jewellery Project is a socially engaged craft research project within the field of contemporary jewellery design. As a participatory research project, Flourish aims to not only empower women through the act of making but also to examine the role of craft making - in particular, contemporary jewellery design - and how it engages with disadvantaged, underrepresented and hard-to-reach communities.

Flourish has been funded by Creative Scotland/The Goldsmiths’ Centre and Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh to support women recovering from trauma in discovering the power of jewellery making. As an organisation, they have delivered outreach sessions and a year-long project for women who have experienced homelessness, addiction and domestic violence. The project has positively impacted participants who now report increased levels of wellbeing and skill building. The project is now a social enterprise that continues to work with individuals and hard-to-reach communities through the act of making.
