Learn how to use clay coiling and hump moulding processes. Work with naturally found clay, air drying clay or plasticine and a range of objects such as bowls, plastic packaging and flower pots to mimic hump moulds used to construct stem vessels.
Taking inspiration from ancient Greek Kylix ‘eye cups’, this free workshop will be led by master ceramicist Dan Chapple. Dan has over 20 years experience teaching at Plymouth College of Art and is a practicing potter in his own studio in Tamar Valley. The workshop will be streamed live from our fully equipped ceramics workshops at Plymouth College of Art.
The session will run from 2.00pm for 1 hour on Friday 14 May. Techniques will be demonstrated using a step-by-step guide to give you the best possible insights. There will also be a chance to ask questions as you go along. Participants will need to prepare the following material and equipment in advance of the workshop:
Any type of clay (alternative: air drying clay, natural found clay, plasticine). Minimum quantity is 2kg Tools and equipment
Ceramic or wooden bowl, terracotta plant pot, food packaging to act as hump moulds, (if you have any hump moulds then please bring them along)
Pointy knife/ scalpel (alternative: pin or needle)
Cloth to roll clay on such as an old, clean tea cloth
Rolling pin
Two wooden battens or sticks, to be used as rolling guides (alternative: thick card in layers) approximately 20-40 cm long
