An exhibition of chairs exploring their sculptural possibilities inspired by the processes and materials of traditional upholstery work.
Hidden Strengths is an exhibition of new work created by ARt ChaiRs (Sarah Skinner). Much of Sarah’s work is inspired by the layering, the strong structural materials and the time-consuming processes that are usually hidden away under the top fabric of a reupholstered chair. She is also interested in the stories that chairs might hold as well as the overt connections between a chair and the human body it supports.
Self-proclaimed chair enthusiast Sarah will also be offering ‘chair surgeries’ during the exhibition period for anybody who wants to bring along, talk about or explore ideas for old chairs.
Sarah says “I’m looking forward to showing my chairs in an exhibition space where they might be seen as sculptural objects rather than purely functional seating. I love the materials of traditional upholstery and I am probably a little obsessed with upholstery webbing, twisting and looping it, showing it off - there is so much you can do with it and usually it is just hidden away.'
