  • London Story Map by Ekta Kaul

Crafts magazine invites you to the last in a series of three online mindful making workshops to help you relax, unwind and enjoy the meditative power of working with your hands. It coincides with our Mind & Body issue (May/June 2021), which explores how the enrapturing act of making can boost your wellbeing. The event is also part of Hey Craft!, the Crafts Council’s nationwide festival of craft participation.

In this workshop, textile artist Ekta Kaul invites you to use stitching to explore the foliage you have encountered during a walk – so that you can experience the soothing, meditative qualities of both nature and craft. Before the workshop, please gather or take photographs of three example of foliage that you are drawn to for its form, colour or texture.

You will need:

Essential:

  • A piece of medium-weight cotton or linen in white or cream (25 x 25cm or 10” x 10”). You could also reuse discarded fabric, such as an old pillow or apron
  • A needle
  • Threads – any you have to hand, including cotton floss, perle or sewing thread
  • A pair of sharp scissors
  • Hoop
  • A pencil or erasable pen to draw
  • Some paper
  • For inspiration: three or more examples or images of foliage you have gathered on a recent walk (for example, a leaf, a flower, an acorn or a twig that caught your attention).

Optional:

  • A needle threader

This Zoom event will feature automatic live closed-captioning
