Is there an aspect of your craft business that you are struggling to resolve? It could be how to get into the stockist of your dreams, knowing which social media platform to put the most effort into, or a professional opinion on where you should position yourself in the craft marketplace.

The Crafts Council has been supporting makers and small craft businesses for 50 years. We do this in many ways but 90 minutes with one of our experts is the most effective approach for many makers. A session with our knowledgeable Business Skills team costs £60 and there are a limited number of sessions available each month.

How does a craft business booster session work?

  • These sessions are designed to help you achieve your professional goals. Don’t worry if you have not defined these yet – this may be what you want to focus your session on!
  • The initial session and follow-up session take place face-to-face online with one expert advisor from the Crafts Council team. All sessions are completely confidential.
  • You submit what area of your business you would like the session to focus on in advance via a questionnaire.
  • Your expert advisor will then do their homework and come to the session with some initial thoughts. You may change your mind once in the session about what you want to discuss. This is completely normal! The expert advisor has a lot of knowledge of the craft sector and will be using coaching methods to ensure that the session is productive, inspiring and leaves you energised and optimistic about your professional future.

I think you totally got where I am coming from which was really helpful.

How do I book?

You can view our available sessions and book your place via the Crafts Council eventbrite page.

We add available booking slots to this page at the start of each month. More dates and times will be announced shortly. Sessions sell out quick so make sure to follow our social media and subscribe to our maker newsletter for announcements.

To book your place:

  • Register on Eventbrite and pay by card.
  • Once you have booked a session you will be sent an email with a short questionnaire that helps our expert advisor shape a productive session.
  • You will then be sent a link to join the session on Zoom.
  • If there are no sessions currently available, please email makerdev@craftscouncil.org.uk to join our waiting list. New dates are announced most months!
  • Don't forget to sign up to our Maker Newsletter and follow our Craft Opportunities Facebook page for the latest Business Skills updates!

What will I get out of it?

  • 90 minutes of face-to-face advice and discussion with one of our experts

Who are they for?

As these sessions are tailored to your needs they genuinely are for any maker at any point of their career. This could include;

  • A maker who has been running a business for many years but who has found themselves in a creative rut.
  • A maker whose business has been adversely affected by the pandemic and needs to diversify their income.
  • A maker who is finding the balance of time making in the studio versus running a business really challenging and needs some tools to make it easier.
  • A recent craft graduate who wants to focus on establishing their brand values and how to bring those to life in their work.
  • A second-career maker with no formal training who wants advice on building the foundations of a craft business.

That was a really helpful session, already swinging into action
