Yinka Ilori in conversation with Mr Doherty

In June 2021 the Crafts Council made its way over to Yinka Ilori's studio to capture the moment he was reunited with his fine art teacher Denis Doherty. We were privileged to hear their reflections on the importance of making in the classroom and the vital role teachers play in inspiring the next generation.

British-Nigerian craft superstar Yinka Ilori joined the Crafts Council’s Board of Trustees in 2020 and is widely revered for his colourful furniture, installations, and public art pieces. Yinka's infectious energy and vibrant artworks, will soon engage young learners throughout the country in a nationwide project titled Craft School: Yinka's Challenge.

Yinka's own creative journey has been heavily influenced by his schooling in Islington, London and in particular the positive impact that his craft, art and design teachers had on him. When Yinka asked us to help find and thank his fine art teacher, Mr Doherty from St Aloysius school in Islington, we jumped at the chance to make this happen.
